Is Twisters a sequel?
Technically, yes. Twisters takes place in the same tornado-riddled world as Twister did back in 1996, but you don't need to have seen the original to enjoy the stand-alone sequel. Certainly, there's some mention of the same tech from the first and second movies, but beyond that, there's just no real crossover here.
That said, the original Twister was one of the highest-grossing films released in 1996, which grossed $495.7 million worldwide at the box office, as well as receiving two Academy Award nominations. So if you like the disaster movie genre, the movie is definitely worth your time.
